Why We Make What We Make
Ester & Salt Co. began the way many good things do—quietly, humbly, and from the kitchen table.
What started as a simple hobby—making soaps and candles as gifts to friends—soon became something more. The kind of more that shows up when the right people say, “You should really do something with this.” The kind of more that keeps your hands busy while your heart is sorting through grief and gratitude, light and loss.
In the span of just one year, the founder of Ester & Salt Co. said goodbye to his mother, grandmother, and mother-in-law. Three matriarchs departed. A season of deep loss followed years already heavy with change. Somewhere in that blur of funerals, farewells, and figuring out how to keep going, the spark to create—to build something honest and good—caught fire.
Ester & Salt Co. was born from that spark. A way to press pause. A way to bring a little light into the room. A way to craft small comforts with intention and joy, while helping others do the same.
The name is a nod to what’s elemental and enduring. Ester—a compound found in natural oils, giving scents their soul. Salt—simple, essential, grounding. Together, they tell a story of what matters: texture, warmth, and the ritual of acceptance and letting go.
At Ester & Salt Co., they believe in the power of lather, of lighting a wick, of sending a card that says exactly what you’re feeling (with just the right amount of snark). They believe in crafting things with soul—not perfection. Everything is handcrafted and perfectly imperfect. They believe in slowing down, in honoring the present, and never saving the good soap for later.
Because life is too short to play it safe. And beauty, they’ve learned, is best when it’s shared.
